What is Video Relay Service?

Video relay service (VRS) replaces the outdated English-based TTY technology.  VRS enables a Deaf person to talk in real time with their doctor, child’s teacher or to place a pizza order with very little effort.  The process is simple.  Using a free videophone, the Deaf consumer calls an interpreter who greets them and asks for the phone number of the person they wish to call.   The interpreter then places the call to the hearing individual's mobile or landline telephone.  When the hearing individual answers their phone, the interpreter will sign to the Deaf consumer while talking with the hearing caller.  The service is free, fast and confidential.

What is IP Relay Service?

IP Relay is a text based form of relay that allows Deaf consumers to use instant messaging software to contact a Caller Assistant (CA) and place telephone calls. The CA greets the Deaf consumer and asks for the phone number of the person they wish to call. The CA then places a call to the hearing individual's mobile or landline phone. When the hearing individual answers their phone, the CA will text the Deaf user and relay the conversation between the two parties. IP Relay is free, fast and confidential.
